– Alexis Madrigal reveals the man behind the the notorious, lovable, f-bomb spewing @MayorEmanuel. (via theatlantic) Holy crap. I know this guy! I was invited to help judge some students’ websites for his class once. Really nice guy and super cool (and funny, duh).

– Why Rahm Emanuel Won - The 312 - Chicago 1. Whet has the best election analysis, bar none, I’ve read today. I know that seems biased since I work there but I was struck by how many cliches were rolled out to explain it. 2. This particular graf hits on what I discussed in my “Census, not consensus”...

Bill Savage on beer, bars, and Chicago (A.V. Club) →
seaofstatic: Bill Savage is kinda awesome. Especially if you’re a nerd for beer, bars and Chicago. It was illegal to open a saloon on Sunday because, of course, it would make Jesus cry. (And thanks again Hannah for the link!)

An Email From Chicago Public Media
livinginlakeview: Dear Cassandra, I’m embarking on what I hope ends up to be a helpful, factual summary of some of the issues surrounding recent proposals in Congress to de-fund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which supports public television and radio stations.  I’m writing this to individuals like you who support WBEZ 91.5  FM,  and our affiliated signals 90.7 FM and 89.5 FM,...

A Good Samaritan with Shiny Shoes →
thisfits: People will judge you by what you wear. Let’s make sure our character matches our clothes. “I was so thirsty and hungry,” said Clark, who lives on a fixed income. “I felt absolutely deserted and I was scared because I kept thinking, ‘What is going to happen in Chicago if I miss my plane?’ I would have to sit on the hard airport bench all night.” But as Clark looked down, trying...

10 cheesy names for the Great Chicago Blizzard of...
thewackydeli: From “Snowmageddon” to “snOMG,” people have been coining some pretty cheesy names for the Great Chicago Blizzard of 2011. In that spirit, The Wacky Deli’s crack team of parody blizzard writers came up with a few of their own! We give them kudos for coming to work on a snow day and braving the blizzard to write them (although it was under protest after the publisher threatened to...

fishy: librarianinlittlecanada: lenorebeadsman: Yes. But there are so many children without anywhere to go, and there are so many children who depend on CPS for one, two, even three meals a day. It’s a terrible system for the teachers, staff, and administrators who don’t live in walking distance. And I haven’t verified this, but I hear that CPS’s policy for days that would be snow days to...
